Friday Feast

I occasionally partake in Miz Booshay's weekly tradition of serving up a wonderful Friday Feast for her blog readers. I found today's questions particularly inspiring. I thought that I would post my answers here in addition to the comments section on her blog. Feel free to join me in the comments section with your answers.

Appetizer

Invent a new flower; give it a name and describe it.

Soup

Name someone whom you think has a wonderful voice.

Salad

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest, how clean do you keep your car?

Main Course

How do you feel about poetry?

Dessert

What was the last person/place/thing you took a picture of?

My answers:
Appetizer
Hmmm, it would be a rich lime green color with some bright lemon yellow highlights, have lots of beautiful long wide petals, like a daisy or a zinnia, and bloom prolifically on long stems so I could cut lots to bring into the house. I could call it "Bright Sunshine" or the "Glowflower".

Soup
There were some great voices listed at Miz B's blog- Patrick Stewart, Julie Andrews, Sam Neill, etc. This is a bit weird, but one voice I love is Dy's husband Zorak- he has the deepest, richest voice- I love it when he answers the phone. Don't worry, Dy knows I love her hubby's voice already, lol. But really, in all honesty, I love my children's voices the best- they took voice lessons this last summer, and they both sing beautifully. The lessons strengthened my Girl's voice, and smoothed the rough edges of my Boy's low deep voice, and it just makes me smile whenever they sing.

Salad
This last car has been kept the cleanest so far- it is about a 6 or 7, but I plan on making it a 9 this weekend.

Main Course
I love it! I love basic, children's poetry that is easy to remember and quote. I love Margaret Wise Brown's poems for children. I love to compose simple poetry to make kids laugh, or to put in a love note. My dh has written several poems- the ones I love the best are the birth story poems he wrote for each child.

I also adore A.A. Milne's poems-
The more it snows, tiddly pom,
the more it goes, tiddly pom,
the more it goes tiddly pom,
on snowing.
And nobody knows, tiddly pom,
how cold my toes, tiddly pom,
how cold my toes tiddly pom,
are growing.

Luckily, my kids like poetry too, and still remember many of the poems I had them memorize when they were little. They say them to our borrowed kids now and make them laugh. What a wonderful tradition!

Dessert
My Girl reading to our borrowed toddler, and the model of DNA my kids made out of K'nex. I hope to take some today of my new shoes.

See you in the comments!

Tidbit: Fairy Name

Your fairy is called Bramble Rainbowglitter
She is a fortune bringer.
She lives in leafy dells and bluebell glades.
She is only seen in the light of a shooting star.
She wears bluebell-blue dresses. She has multicoloured wings like a butterfly.

I found this over at 101 Fairy Lane.

I am feeling a bit better, my muscles are still tight and sore, like I had been exercising hard or something, but I feel better than yesterday. Still seem to have the fever though. No art happened today, just rested on the couch with the laptop on my lap.

Gotta get to bed- Piano Girl has a group voice lesson tomorrow at the studio of TBPTOTP (The Best Piano Teacher On The Planet).

Tag! I'm it.

Chris over at Twilight and Sunrise tagged me for this Book Meme. Here is my task:

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).

2. Open the book to page 123.

3. Find the fifth sentence.

4. Post the next three sentences.

5. Tag five people.

1. Okay, so I am down in the studio, and the nearest book to me is The New Creative Artist: A guide to Developing your Creative Spirit. By Nita Leland. Were you hoping for Dumas or Shakespeare? Come on, you had to know it would be an art book, lol!

2. The title on this page is Bend Reality by Changing the Rules, and is talking about creating abstractions in your art by using design to alter a literal image.

3. There are only 5 sentences total on this page, the rest being technical instructions, so I will work with what are here. The 2nd sentence is: "With every design change, the image moves further from the illusion of reality."

4. The next 3 sentences are: "The more altered the image, the more abstract the art. Eventually, it may become pure abstraction, revealing no apparent connection with the original subject. Intelligent use of design makes such a transformation work." Gosh I hope this isn't boring to you! But this is the stuff I read, and it was this or a book on acrylic techniques, and I think that would have bored you more.

5. Pick 5 folks, hmmm. Let's see how eclectic a list of folks I can come up with. The more diverse and unusual books and answers, the better! Okay.
How 'bout Mama P, Pamela (in the comments, no blog), Crissy @ Soliloquy, PattyMomBobJoanna @ WPMS, and WTMCassandra @ Lutradur & Lace Adventures. Honestly, I could think of 20 people to tag, so if you want to do this, I would love to see it. Just let me know you did it or put it in the comment section if you don't have a blog.

Okay, off to finish some UFOs. My oldest sister has a birthday tomorrow, I owe Amy a fabric post card, and I have some art that I can tidy up and photograph so I have some pieces with which to stock an Etsy shop of my very own.

And an update about the videos for up and coming talky blogs: I accidentally dropped and broke the Boy's camera when he left it laying somewhere it didn't belong, so we don't have any yet, but are working on it. Gotta get his camera repaired first.

Unread books meme

The below listed books are the top 106 books most often marked as being unread by LibraryThing users.

The instructions are simple: Bold what you have read, and italicize books you have started but couldn’t finish. Add an asterisk* to those you have read more than once. Highlight (or underline- i can't seem to locate my underlining feature!) those on your ToBeRead list.

I surprised myself with how many of these I have read, and also notice that there are a great many titles I haven't even heard of before. It also makes me realize how many art books I have read in the last 5 years- the time I spend reading those means less reading from lists like this, but that's ok. On the other hand- I have made my highschooler read many of them- does that count for something?! Hat tip to Carrie @ Mommy Brain.

Make Nice-Twice!

Have you had a kindness shown?
Pass it on;
'Twas not given for thee alone,
Pass it on;
Let it travel down the years,
Let it wipe another's tears,
'Til in Heaven the deed appears -
Pass it on.
~Henry Burton, Pass It On

Well what do you know? I have received my first-ever blog award-from two different bloggers! Andie was kind enough to think of me as a nice blogger, and so was Kitten. They both said some very nice things about me, and that felt good! It's not a leg lamp, but I will take it. So now I get to pass on the nicey-niceness and pick 7 nice bloggers of my own. This will be tough, as Andie and Kitten picked many of the same bloggers I would! Let's see......

First off, I nominate Nan @ Life is Like a Lunchbox. Not only is Nan nice, but she is generous in spirit as well. She came up with the idea to fancy up my blog, and did it while her in-laws were visiting even. Way nice!

2nd, how about Miz Booshay over at Quiet Life. She is always nice, in a very encouraging way. Whenever I am struggling to be a mom, a wife, a teacher, or any other part of my life, I head over to Quiet Life, for a dose of encouragement. I love you, Miz B. You bring out the best in me.

3rd, Amy @ The Foil Hat. I love Amy, too. She is thoughtful and kind, but mostly, she makes me laugh- the kind of spew your Vitaminwater on your keyboard laugh. That's nice, and I need that.

4th is Poppins. I find her blog to be very inspirational on many subjects. And not only is she generous in sharing links, she is the generous brain behind The Denim Jumper, a great place for secular homeschoolers to hang out.

5th is Sue Bleiweiss. 6th is Terri S. Both of these amazing and talented ladies are so very nice. They share their enthusiasm for art as well as detailed tutorials and how-to's. They are two of my biggest encouragements when it comes to this art journey I am beginning. Thanks, gals.

7th is Dy. I do not care if she has already been given this award, she gets it again. Dy is such an amazing person. She is one of my best parenting examples. She has such patience and grace with her children. In addition to being the amazing mother of five and a dedicated wife, she is a true friend. She calls me regularly to make sure I am ok, and we commiserate, and laugh together. I love her with my heart and soul, and still wish she and Zorak were in love with the northwest as much as they are the southwest.

8th: Ok, there isn't supposed to be an 8th, but I am adding it since a couple of my recipients were already nominated for this award. 8th is Bridget. I just love Bridget's cheerful outlook on life and on her blog- Bridget has a great family she loves with all her heart, and I love the way she showcases them on her blog. Another nice thing about Bridget is that she is one of my regular commenters. Now THAT is nice! I was about ready to give up on blogging a few months ago, and then Bridget started leaving me comments. This was very encouraging, and is one of the reasons I do my best to blog regularly. Thanks, Bridget!

Now for the Official Stuff: "This award is for those bloggers who are nice people; good blog friends and those who inspire good feelings and inspiration. Also for those who are a positive influence on our blogging world. Once you've been awarded please pass it on to 7 others who you feel are deserving of this award."

Ok ladies, whom will you pick? And thanks again for being part of my blogosphere.

High School Meme

Saw this over at Writing and Living. I really didn't like high school much- I had been to a private (7th Day Adventist) school for all 10 years. There were 10 kids in my 10th grade class- 210 in the whole school! There were more than that in one grade at the high school. I started at Lake Washington High as a Junior, and it seemed so big to me! My parents were not supportive of my education, my home life was, well, I hate to say it, now that my mom and I get along so well, but it was sheer dysfunctional hell. My friends and their parents, many of whom I am still friends with today, got me through.

As I go back and read my answers, I see that there are many different stories here- almost one for each question, if I chose to tell them. I always had the story that high school was hell, and the only good thing about it was my group of friends. I know now, that for most of us, it was hell, but looking back on it now, with dimming faculties, it doesn't seem so bad- compared to some of the things that have happened to me as an adult. Especially since I have forgiven my parents and come to terms with this part of my life- it was my life that sucked, not the high school.

I won't tag anyone, but I would love it if you did this one. But if you were a perky cheerleader, or LOVED high school, or would LOVE to go back, I may hate you for a minute or twelve.

1. Who was your best friend?
I had a lot of close friends, but Mary Johnson was the best. She married her high school sweetheart, and I am still friends with both of them. When we get together, it is like we have never been apart. I see her every couple of months. I love her to pieces. Big D and I were close too, but got closer when he was in college.

2. Did you play any sports?
Good. God. No.

3. What kind of car did you drive?
No car. I live 2 blocks from the high school. I didn't drive till I was 22. Mary had a car senior year.

4. It’s Friday night. Where were you?
At Mary's or Jeff Lang's house, or tping a friend's house, or at a Mormon dance- best dances ever!

5. Were you a party animal?
Yeah. We held most of our parties at Jeff Lang's house. His mom was wonderful for allowing her house to be the hangout. The parties got a bit wild when everyone (but me, sigh) was in college, but she still put up with us.

6. Were you considered a flirt?
I don't know. Probably not.

7. Were you in the band, orchestra or choir?
Nope. Many of my classes at the SDA school didn't count for credit, so I didn't get to take any electives- too busy trying to fit the required classes in.

8. Were you a nerd?
Nope. Wasn't super popular, but found a great group of kids to hang out with, somewhere in the middle between popular and geek. Still friends with many of them. Big D, whom I blog about occasionally is one of them.

9. Were you ever suspended or expelled?
Nope. I would bend the rules occasionally, but wasn't much of a rule-breaker.

10. Can you sing the fight song?
I didn't even know the fight song when I was *IN* high school. I only went to the games because my friends played in the band, and I liked Louie Louie.

11. Who was your favorite teacher?
I had two: Mr. Jones. Speech teacher. He was gorgeous and kind. I was painfully shy and really struggled. He helped. Mrs. Ulch, spanish teacher. She was a 7th Day Adventist, too. We related.

12. What was your school mascot?
A purple and gold kangaroo. Honest.

13. Did you go to the Prom?
Junior year, Mary and I took each other out to a fancy dinner and a movie (World According to Garp, if memory serves). We had a ball. Senior year I went with Scotty, my high school sweetie, but only because his mother forced us.

14. If you could go back, would you?
Good God no! I sometimes have nightmares about being in high school!

15. What do you remember most about graduation?
Being handed the little scroll and not knowing if I had graduated or not (I was going to drop out, but Mary and Scotty talked me out of it, so I turned in 7 major papers on the last day of school. FYI, I passed, but barely.)

16. Where were you on Senior Skip Day?
I don't remember. If I did skip, I was with my friends, but I don't think I did.

17. Did you have a job your senior year?
Many jobs. My main job was scooping at Baskin-Robbins. I also babysat tons. I paid rent at home so needed to work.

18. Where did you go most often for lunch?
I would get lunch in the cafeteria and then bring it to the commons to eat with my friends.

19. Have you gained weight since then?
Yes. I was always round, and I have gone up and down since then. Right now I am 50 lbs more than in high school. What would Scotty think?? Somehow I don't think he would be appalled.

20. What did you do after graduation?
Got my first apartment, where my rent was cheaper than what my mom charged me. Worked 4 jobs- as a teaching assistant at a private school, ran and supervised a church nursery, part-time nanny-share with two families, and the ice cream store. I also helped out at Mary's mom's daycare sometimes. Also took classes at the voc. tech. Whew!!!

21. What year did you graduate?
1983

22. Who was your Senior Prom Date?
Scotty. He proposed to me that night. It was the only good thing that happened that night- the rest of it was a story that deserves a post all on its own.

23. Are you going/did you go to your 10 year reunion?
Nope. Do they do one for 25? Or is it 30? I might like to go if I lost a bit of this weight, mostly just to see Scotty and other friends I have lost touch with (I guess that is what it is all about). I still have a soft spot for him in my heart after all these years. He was a good fella. I sorta wanted to go to the ones in the past, but I let the facts that they are pricey and that my Dude wouldn't come with me stop me from going.

HodgePodge: Kludge, and the daily grind.

Busy, busy. This morning was filled with the smells of sausages, eggs, and raisin bran (note to self: this particular cereal is so much better suited to muffins than becoming a bowl of mush). The sounds of piano practice and the washer going around. Warm sunshine, and clucky chickens. A phone call to Dy, a good scrubby bath, a lecture on honesty and diligence for the teen, and making sure everyone brushed their teeth.

This afternoon was filled with a toddler fix, piano and voice lessons (which we are loving!). Papa even drove us so we didn't have to spend 4 hours on the bus. Thanks, Dude! Then home for supper, and a couple of episodes of That 70's Show. I know, I know, but I like it! Not having cable, it is new to us. We also made some pudding.

Now the kids are doing the dishes, and then they will do a bit more school and eat some pudding before bed.

A good day. I also spent some time reading some of my fave blogs. If you haven't yet checked out Kludge's blog, do so. He writes about varied and sometimes random topics, and I find his writing to be thought-provoking as well as humourous. And I am not just saying that because he is my nephew, or because he likes Sci-Fi like I do. I only met him once when he was a teen, but it has been fun to get to know him through his blog.

Before I sign off for the night, here is a quiz, which I happened to get from Kludge. Thought it was fun. And one last thing: Kludge, dear boy- wherever did you come up with that name?? I just gotta know.

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You?

In a perfect allergy-free world...........

Got this one from Bridgit.
Caramel Frappuccino

Creative and expressive, you tend to match your Frappuccino flavor to your mood. And a flavored syrup is always a must!

Yup. 'Cept that I am allergic to dairy, so I would rather get the equivilant over at Tully's where they will make it with rice milk- no whip. But they got it right that I am a caramel fan- too bad it has milk in it. But if I am going to splurge, I would much rather have caramel than chocolate, and I am allergic to it as well.

So far, I haven't won anything yet. I entered over 400 contests, so I still haven't lost hope, but as I said before, if all I get out of this is a whole mess of new blog visitors, I will be happy!

Tidbit: Bloggy Giveaway update.

Well, this has been so much fun! It is nice to see so many new folks visit the blog. I really hope some of you come back and visit again. You still have some time to enter, feel free to still sign up! At 3:00 pm my time I will put names in a hat, and get one of the kids to draw one lucky person's name to win my funky package! Winner's name will be posted later tonight. (Updated to say that we have numbers written on slips of paper, and they are in my sunhat. Just waiting for a few more souls to enter the contest now!)

My bloggy giveaway- funky poster collection

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

And so the fun begins! When I went to Rocks in my Dryer today, there were over 400 sites participating in the bloggy giveaway! Be sure to check out the list here and then visit a bunch of sites and enter in a bunch of contests!

Like all the other participants in the big giveaway, I'll draw from among those who leave a comment on this post by July 27th at 5 pm (EST). I HOPE YOU WIN!! (Remember: Anyone can enter. Bloggers and non-bloggers can enter, but only commenters have a chance to win!)

For my giveaway, I went down to the studio (of course) and wandered around to see what I had that I wasn't using. Here are some things I found:

1. A magnetic word calendar for '07. I know the year is half over, but there is a board with lots of magnet words, and lots of poetry, and inspiration. Besides, it's free!

2. A funky 11 X 17 Pondering Pool poster a friend gave me. She gave me two, and this one just didn't speak to me the way the other one did. But it is cute and fun, and I know someone will love it.

3. I have a funky chicken refrigerator magnet someone gave me- still in it's packaging.

4. I will also throw in a couple of pairs of homemade earrings I still have from my craft-fair days. I will just reach in and choose- we will both be surprised.

I am sorry for the lack of photos- again they are trapped in my camera. I think I need a new memory card, sigh.

I also am sorry to say, I am going to open this giveaway to U.S. residents only. As much as I would like to, I just cannot afford the high postage rates for out of the states. Don't hate me for that, ok?

What's in your bag?

Hey LB!

Who me??
Yeah you! Whatcha' got in your bag?

Well, I have some watercolor pencils, and 2 boxes of my fave woodless colored pencils. Also have some lip balm.

I have my pencils, an eraser, one big sketch book, and a tiny one, my Art Quilt Workbook, and an old bus transfer.
And to be honest, this post is an excuse to show two things: the Dude wanted to see a picture of my mural with me in it, so he could get the scale of the design better. I haven't painted on it in months, though. It needs some work! I also had a request to show off my short, short hair.

I also used to love it when people would do those what is in your purse posts. My art bag is as close to a purse as I get most of the time, so I thought this would work.

Me/Not Me Meme, part 3

Last one for awhile, I promise! So far, it has been fairly materialistic, this meme. I honestly think most of you knew I am not a diamonds kind of gal, anyhoo. Let's move into the kitchen, shall we?

Not me.

Me.

Not Me. (Damn allergies!)

Me.

Okay, the men are ready for supper and so am I. Later Gator.

Me/Not Me Meme, part 2

Hey! You came back! You must be ready for round two! Hey now, what did you expect me to be doing while being anxious about my traveling child? Work in the studio? Or do the dishes? Nope. Not me. I am too busy engaging in mindless entertainment- just for you!

Not Me.

Me.

Not Me.

Me.

Thus ends round two of the Me/ Not Me Meme. Do I have time for one more round before my menfolk take me out for fish 'n chips? I think I do. Are you happy or sad?
